Empowering Youth with Disabilities: Celebrating Strength and Resilience on National Youth Day

As Zambia commemorates National Youth Day under the theme “Voices Amplified and Innovations Ignited,” the Sililo Foundation shines a spotlight on the often-overlooked yet incredibly resilient youth with disabilities. Despite facing numerous challenges, these young Zambian citizens are breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and achieving greatness in different spheres.
Youth with disabilities in Zambia face myriad of challenges that hinder their full participation in society. These include:
1. Inaccessible education and healthcare facilities.
2. Limited employment opportunities and vocational training.
3. Social stigma and discrimination.
4. Lack of accessible transportation and public spaces.
Despite these challenges, youth with disabilities in Zambia have demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience. They are:
1. Advocating for their rights and inclusive policies.
2. Developing innovative solutions to accessibility challenges.
3. Pursuing education and career goals with determination.
4. Building supportive communities.
The theme “Voices Amplified and Innovations Ignited” resonates deeply with the experiences of youth with disabilities. As the country celebrates National Youth Day, we must:
1. Provide platforms for youth with disabilities to share their stories and ideas.
2. Support innovative initiatives that promote accessibility and inclusion.
3. Foster a culture of empathy, understanding, and empowerment.
Therefore, as Zambia commemorates National Youth, we recognise the incredible strength and resilience of youth with disabilities. We must continue to amplify their voices, ignite their innovations, and create a more inclusive and accessible society for all. By doing so, we can unlock the full potential of youth with disabilities and build a brighter future for Zambia.
